So eventually the effort put into the recruitment project has produced a candidate you’re excited about and equally they’re excited about the prospect of a new career journey with your company.

We realise how important the recruitment experience is to your company brand – the next challenge is about how you manage their introduction to a new work environment.

Successful onboarding is the way to welcome new hires and get them settled into their new careers.

Why does it matter?

In today’s fast paced job market people can switch jobs as often as every 2 – 4 years so it’s important to get new hires productive and integrated to the team as quickly as possible.

Anecdotally we understand employees make the decision on whether to stay with the company within year 1 – but there are also compelling business reasons to ensure successful onboarding.

According to research conducted by the data analytics/market research company Aberdeen Group:

– 91% of employees were retained, as compared to 30% of employees at organisations without formal onboarding

– 62% of employees hired in the last twelve months met first performance milestones on time, as compared to 17% among organisations without formal onboarding

– 33% year on year improvement in hiring manager satisfaction, as compared to 3% increase among organisations without formal onboarding.

Despite all this very few companies or HR departments go to the trouble of designing any proper onboarding approach.

Many years ago when I started a new job I was given an office to myself in the attic of the Georgian building – well removed from my new colleagues, and handed a batch of technical files so I could read myself in to the job! – within hours I was wondering what a huge mistake I might have made!
