The Challenge

This company, Ireland’s longest established consulting engineering practice (subsequently merged with a global player), wished to source an exceptional engineering professional to head up their Water Division. The requirement was for somebody with excellent water engineering expertise, proven management skills and a true commercial disposition.

Torc Response

We proposed to handle this assignment as a dedicated search (Head-hunt) and immediately briefed our researcher to collect information on the market in Ireland and also the UK. This produced a listing of practices with comparable expertise and identified some potential candidates including some in related organisations e.g. public sector bodies.

In the course of a review of these listings with our client’s Chairman and MD, we were instructed not to approach a small number of candidates for a variety of reasons but got the green light to proceed with the remainder.

We systematically approached candidates to present the opportunity, gauge the level of interest and get an initial assessment of the level of expertise. Those candidates who scored most highly on our competency framework checklist were called to formal screening interview with Torc.

Within weeks we were in a position to present our shortlist of candidates to the board and following their internal interview process an offer was made and accepted.

The Result

The appointment, part of the company’s succession planning strategy, has proved very successful.
