The Headhunter’s Friend
by Paddy Collins on February 21st, 2010
Getting on the headhunter's radar pays dividends in today's job market
Anecdotal evidence suggests that many jobs are being filled in the current market through the headhunting route. There are a variety of reasons why this quiet, under the radar, way might be favoured:
(a) candidates in jobs are slow to move in a recession – they have less of an itch to pore through traditional job sites and job ads;
(b) companies who have downsized in recent times do not want to be seen, especially by ex-employees, to be recruiting again so soon;
(c) demand for talent is in sectors where the supply of qualified candidates is still quite tight.
The challenging task for the headhunter is to identify and target candidates who match the client’s brief in every respect. So what can a candidate do to help the headhunter, and of course potentially further their own career prospects?
Getting on the headhunter’s radar
Above all, candidates should take action to develop and enhance their profile so they can be found more easily. Here are a few tips:
- Social networking sites – probably the most effective business networking site is Linkedin and people who want to get known should build a strong profile on this site and actively build and ‘work’ their network.
- Write articles – the traditional and still best way to get noticed – and there are many publications out there looking for content.
- Speak at industry seminars/conferences – not feasible for everybody, but the least you can do is ask a probing question.
- Attend seminars – when registering always give your full job title and contact details; work the room during breaks.
- Develop your personal network – how many people in your drama or walking club know your career aspirations? Headhunters always look for referrals.
- Update your skills – take ownership for skills development; go to an evening class and also make new industry contacts.
- Become market aware . Make sure you know what’s happening in your market sector, which companies are on the move and which headhunters are active – if possible try to meet some headhunters and get to know them.
Polish your CV & get active
And, while you’re waiting for that call, why not polish up your CV and make it a truly impressive brochure for your skills and expertise.
Remember, this recession wont last forever – use it wisely in preparing for the inevitable upturn.
