The Challenge

This client organisation was undergoing a series of changes in short order: (1) a merger with a rival organisation, (2) a relocation of offices to a new site, (3) a nomination to move again under the government decentralisation programme, (4) a major product & service revitalisation initiative and (5) the introduction of PMDS.

Torc Response

Torc worked with internal HR to design a 2-day programme to strengthen the Emotional Intelligence (EQ) capacity of the organisation. Individual participation was entirely voluntary, which in effect meant the quality of the initiative had to be so compelling that it made for a self-propagating roll-out. This involved designing thought-provoking workshops around themes of Self-regard, Assertiveness, Empathy, Impulse Control and Resilience to inculcate a self-confident culture built on a framework of these key self-management competencies.

Participants were also asked to complete online the self-reporting Bar-On Reuven Emotional Intelligence (EQi) questionnaire – and, one-to-one feedback consultations on individual results were provided in parallel with the group workshops.

The Result

Enrolment was driven by word-of-mouth internal referral and waiting lists developed early – such was the enthusiasm that developed after the initial pilot. The level of awareness and skills engendered around the EQ framework of tools & techniques to manage oneself and others was readily embraced and a palpable culture of empowerment inhered.
